East-west highway draws NYT interest
The latest proposal for an east-west highway in Maine got some high exposure as the subject of a story that appeared Saturday in the New York Times.
In the story, Peter Vigue, CEO of Cianbro Corp. in Pittsfield and the major proponent of the $2 billion project, said the expansions of the Suez and Panama canals brings urgency to the highway, since cargo ships will be looking for less congested ports to transfer their freight. He suggested the port of Eastport could be well positioned for that business if the east-west highway were a reality.
The idea, which has been debated for decades, secured $300,000 from lawmakers for a feasibility study. Vigue's proposal for the 220-mile toll road would be privately financed.
