Rail extension work starts at Auburn transportation hub

Officials announced today that a $3 million railroad renovation project, to connect business parks in Poland and Auburn to Auburn's intermodal transportation hub, is under way.

The Sun Journal reported the $3 million approved several years ago by a state bond issue will be used to renovate 6,600 feet of the former Rangeley Branch line and make other improvements.

In a press release, officials said the improvement will provide direct rail access to around 400 acres of land in Auburn and Poland.

The project will also include construction of a new 400-foot spur from the main line and 1,500 feet of siding so trains can pull over and allow other trains to pass.

The renovation will also serve to alleviate congestion on the existing train service that uses the intermodal transportation hub.

The paper reported that construction on the project is expected to finish this fall.
