Summit, MNG face off again in Augusta

Maine Natural Gas and Summit Natural Gas of Maine are competing again, this time for municipal and county contracts in the Augusta area.

The Kennebec Journal reported both companies have submitted proposals to provide natural gas to city, school, county and court buildings in Augusta, Gardiner and Hallowell.

The paper reported that Maine Natural Gas's $50 million proposal focuses on serving about 70% of Augusta's residents and businesses, or roughly 7,500 customers. With a $95 million proposal, Summit estimates it would serve 13,000 customers in the capital area.

The latest bids follow a heated legal dispute between the companies over a contract to provide natural gas service to state facilities. Both companies then launched campaigns to court commercial customers in the area.

MNG and Summit are beginning work this spring on pipelines that will serve as the backbone of their natural gas infrastructures in the Kennebec Valley.
