Brunswick-based RAS Corp. has closed on a new round of financing from Coastal Enterprises Inc., advancing its plans for an onshore aquaculture facility at the former naval surveillance operations center in Corea.
Maine Public Broadcasting Network reported that RAS has purchased an option on a seven-acre parcel and a 40,000-square-foot building at the former Navy base in the Down East town, where Chairman and Chief Business Officer Ed Robinson said the company could decide to locate in the next six to 12 months.
The news station reported two other firms, Maine Halibut and Palom Aquaculture LLC, are also eyeing that property, which is zoned for aquaculture, for new operations.
Robinson said RAS is continuing tests to raise black sea bass and California yellowtail, both species that require warmer waters than those off the Maine coast. The company plans to sell those fish to New England markets for starters.
