Scarborough town officials are hoping that developmental incentives and rebranding of an approximately two-mile stretch of road known as the Haigis Parkway will attract both commercial and residential development.
According to The Forecaster the Haigis Parkway, which was built to be an entryway to Scarborough stretching between Route 1 and I-95 Exit 42, has already seen a number of zoning changes made to spur development. One of those was in 2015, when a zoning change aimed to attract craft brewers and coffee roasters by allowing more “food and small-batch processing companies” into the stretch. But despite the changes, development has been slow, The Forecaster reported.
Scarborough officials now are hoping that a rebranding and possible renaming, paired with changes under way for multi-family housing, will bring more development into the area. The town plans to unveil its incentive package in the fall.
“We don’t want to be waiting; we really think there’s a new story to tell about Haigis,” Karen Martin, president and executive director of the Scarborough Economic Development Corp., told councilors at an Aug. 17 workshop, according to The Forecaster.
