Rent-a-Husband founder pleads not guilty

Kaile Warren, the Rent-a-Husband founder accused of deceiving investors, pleaded not guilty yesterday to securities fraud and other charges.

At Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland, Warren pleaded not guilty to three charges of theft by deception, securities fraud and sale of unregistered securities, according to Current Publishing. Warren, who earned national fame for the Windham-based handyman chain, was indicted in December following allegations that he falsely portrayed his company as financially sound in order to attract investors, and that he used investment money for personal use.

Warren's attorney, Dan Lilley, argued in court that the recession was the reason Warren was unable to pay back investors. "The investors were naïve to think he could pay back even a promissory note in this economic climate," Lilley said, according to the paper. Warren owes more than $1.6 million to dozens of investors, according to the Portland Press Herald. Jury selection for Warren's trial will begin May 14.
