Report criticizes DHHS

A nonpartisan legislative committee has found that the Department of Health and Human Services is not adequately overseeing some of its contracted providers.

The Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability reported that DHHS is disbursing cash to providers without a systematic process to determine the actual costs of the contracted services, according to Capitol News Service.

OPEGA Senior Analyst Jennifer Reichenbach said the lack of such a system resulted in DHHS sometimes overpricing contracts with non-Medicaid service providers, forcing the agency to recover these costs later. Reichenbach said improving the cash management practices at the DHHS could result in $2.6 million in savings annually, the news service said.
