Report: Going green could create 9,000 jobs

Maine could stand to gain over 9,000 new jobs as part of a proposed national green economic recovery program, according to a report released today by the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

The report, "Green recovery -- A program to create good jobs and start building a low-carbon economy," proposes that all levels of government invest $100 billion nationwide to develop a green infrastructure that includes expanding alternative energy sources and mass transit, and retrofitting buildings to improve energy efficiency. The Maine-specific section of the report recommends the Pine Tree state receive $396 million of that public funding, which would create 9,132 jobs in the state and reduce unemployment here from 5% to 3.8% in two years. Nationwide, the green infrastructure program would create two million jobs, according to the report.

The report was commissioned by the Center for American Progress, based in Washington, D.C., and released locally by the Natural Resources Council of Maine.
