Maine's public education costs are not rising as quickly as their peers, according to new data from the College Board.
Tuition at Maine's four-year universities rose 4.5% over last year, while tuition at community colleges increased 2%, MaineToday Media reported. The national averages were 8.3% for four-year schools and 8.7% for two-year schools. Another report from the Compact for Higher Education found that, over the last decade, tuition and fees at Maine universities have not increased as much as others in New England. Over the last 10 years, the cost to enroll at all types of institutions rose 42%, while the New England average was 68%. Compact Executive Director Henry Bourgeois told the news company the increase is still too high, and that higher costs could deter more people from seeking higher education.
The nonprofit compact is working to raise the proportion of Maine adults with a postsecondary degree or credential to 56% by 2020. Currently the proportion is 39%, far below the New England average of 47%.
