Program to train students for tech work

Presque Isle software and customer service company BalanceBPO has partnered with the University of Maine at Presque Isle to create a certification program in process outsourcing.

Officials from UMPI and BalanceBPO, which opened in Presque Isle last year, announced the program on Friday along with New York-based digital payments company TxVia, according to the Bangor Daily News. The 75-hour Business Process Outsourcing Certification Course aims to prepare students for work at BalanceBPO and TxVia, including resolving customer concerns at the first contact. Texas-based BalanceBPO works with Fortune 500 companies to handle inbound customer service and technical support calls, and shares a facility in Presque Isle with TxVia.

Tim Lavin, BalanceBPO co-founder, told the paper the company is working to patent its business process service, with plans to sell software to businesses interested in implementing it. Students in the UMPI program will learn software development, consulting, business development and administration, all jobs BalanceBPO plans to offer once it begins licensing its software. The course starts in January.
