Report: UMaine a good return on investment

The University of Maine System generates slightly more than $8 of economic activity for every $1 it received in state funding, according to a study released yesterday by the university system.

The report says Maine's public universities had an economic impact of nearly $1.5 billion last year and annually provides more than $375 million in income and benefits to more than 13,000 part- and full-time employees. The seven-campus system also stimulates an additional 7,711 jobs in the state and an additional $241 million in income and benefits. The complete report is available here.

At the meeting, UMS Chancellor Richard Pattenaude also told the trustees he would be launching an efficiency initiative to reduce costs, shift savings to priority areas and reduce student tuition, according to the Sun Journal in Lewiston. He said his goals would be elaborated on in future meetings, the paper said.
