Residents contest XNG Eliot terminal approval

The Boston-based Xpress Natural Gas has secured state and federal permits for a new distribution hub in Eliot, but the plan is meeting with local opposition from nearby residents who say the construction project stands to increase flooding near their home.

The York County Coast Star reported that a couple who lives near the location of the planned distribution facility have filed an appeal with the town planning board’s Board of Appeals, arguing that preliminary flood maps show the area at a flood risk level that would prohibit the planned construction over 0.26 acres of wetland.

Marybeth Richardson, of the DEP’s Division of Land Resource Regulation, said that the permit is based on current maps, which show less of a flood risk for the property. The project has received permits from both the Army Corps of Engineers and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

John Nahill, XNG’s president and CEO, told Mainebiz in September that the Eliot expansion will allow the company to serve southern parts of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts with trucked natural gas from the Maritimes & Northeast Natural Gas pipeline.

That expansion comes as the company is also working to increase capacity 40% at a distribution hub in Baileyville and as it looks for a third location in central Maine.
