The Maine Department of Labor says a security breach at JPMorgan Chase & Co. may have exposed some personal information of about 1,300 Mainers receiving unemployment insurance.
The department reported in a press release that it is investigating why it took three months for the company to give notice of the mid-September breach. The department said Friday it did not immediately have information on which individual debit card accounts used for transferring unemployment benefits may have been affected.
The data in question may have included claimants’ card numbers, dates of birth, user IDs, passwords and email addresses.
The Portland Press Herald reported Michael Fusco, a spokesman for JPMorgan Chase, declined to say why it waited to notify Maine of the breach and said the priority was to fix the issue and notify the affected cardholders.
The breach was part of a broader cyberattack against the bank that affected over 450,000 cardholders in several states. The paper reported the FBI and U.S. Secret Service are investigating the cause of the breach.
