Resources Council exec to step down

Brownie Carson, executive director of the Natural Resources Council of Maine and one of the state's strongest environmental advocates, is stepping down.

Carson, who has been at the helm of the organization since 1984, said in a release that his decision was based on a desire to spend more time with family and friends, and explore the natural wonders of Maine. During Carson's tenure, NRCM spearheaded many first-in-the-nation laws such including non-carbonated and alcoholic beverage bottles in its bottle bill and the removal of Edwards Dam in Augusta to restore the free flow of the Kennebec River -- the first time federal regulators ruled that the environmental value of a river outweighed the economic benefits of a dam, according to the release.

Carson will leave his post later this year, according to the release. The NRCM board will conduct a nationwide search for his replacement.
