Aroostook County to host 2011 biathlon

Northern Maine ski areas will play host to the North American leg of the Biathlon World Cup in 2011, according to a press release from the Maine Winter Sports Center.

The International Biathlon Union on Tuesday announced Presque Isle's Nordic Heritage Center will host part of the Biathlon World Cup from February 4-6 next year, just a week before Fort Kent's World Cup events February 10-13. This will be Presque Isle's first World Cup biathlon, which combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. The two ski areas are owned by the Caribou-based MWSC, a nonprofit that promotes skiing as a rural economic development tool. Lake Placid, N.Y., was originally selected as the first site of the North American tour, but withdrew from consideration.

Fort Kent's 10th Mountain Ski Club hosted the state's first Biathlon World Cup in 2004, and the state has hosted other national and international skiing competitions, including the 2010 Junior Olympic National Cross-Country Ski Championships this March.
