Rival asphalt plant planned in Westbrook

A Westbrook construction company has submitted a plan to build an asphalt plant in the city.

White Brothers Inc. plans to file a site plan application with the city for an asphalt plant at the company's headquarters at 95 Warren Ave., according to the Portland Press Herald. The company hopes to expand into the paving business. White Brothers said the plant would create roughly 20 jobs.

Another application for an asphalt plant, Pike Industries' plans for a $5 million plant off of Spring Street, has sparked opposition from nearby businesses that claim the plant would damage business growth and quality of life in the area, the paper reported. City officials said they did not expect White Brothers' plan to spark any resistance because it is surrounded by construction businesses.
