Rockland chef wins James Beard award

The owner and chef at the Rockland restaurant Primo has won the nation's top culinary honor for the Northeast.

The Portland Press Herald reported that chef Melissa Kelly, who opened her Rockland restaurant 14 years ago, won the Best Chef in the Northeast award from the James Beard Foundation Monday night during a ceremony at New York City's Lincoln Center.

Kelly is a previous award winner, taking the top honor for the first time in 1999 during her time at Old Chatham Sheepherding Co. in New York.

Kelly's competition for this year's title included three chefs in the Boston area and one in New York. Kelly was the only finalist from Maine in this year's awards. Krista Kern Desjardins, chef and owner of Bresca in Portland, and Brian Hill, chef and owner of Francine Bistro in Camden, were semifinalists in the category.
