Rockland City Council signals support for energy plant moratorium
Rockland city councilors gave preliminary approval Monday to a six-month moratorium on energy plants, potentially jeopardizing a proposal to build a natural-gas fired power plant in the city.
Evan Coleman, a partner with Rockland Energy Center, the company proposing the plant, told city councilors last week that his company would go elsewhere if the moratorium is approved.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Rockland councilors voted 3-2 for the moratorium, and a final vote is scheduled for Jan. 11.
The BDN reported that a majority of residents who spoke at the meeting Monday supported the moratorium, but the city’s firefighters association and the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce have urged the city to hold off on the moratorium until Rockland Energy presents its proposal in February.
Coleman has said the plant would likely be able to generate 35 megawatts, and a natural gas pipeline would likely be built underground between Searsmont and Rockland.
