Rockland energy plant proposal gets first OK

The Rockland City Council has approved an option-to-buy agreement for a Boston energy company that is seeking to build a $200 million natural gas-fired plant on city property.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the city council on Friday voted 4-0 to grant the option, two days after failing to do so in an initial vote. The option will have Rockland Energy Center LLC, a subsidiary of Energy Management Inc., pay $1,000 a month for Rockland’s City Hall and public services garage while negotiating a sale agreement with the city.

Rockland Energy Center’s proposal has drawn some opposition from residents who are concerned about the plant’s environmental impacts. But if approved, the company said, it would create 12 to 18 permanent jobs and and provide the city with significant tax revenue.

The energy plant is estimated to cost $200 million to build, though it will require up to a $20 million investment from another company to extend a natural gas line to Rockland.
