The Rockland City Council is considering giving four properties Pine Tree Zone status to help two local businesses expand their operations.
The city council on June 8 will hold a public hearing on a proposal to place the properties in the Pine Tree Zone, which would give tax breaks to the businesses planning on locating there, according to VillageSoup. Rockland-based Ascendant Energy is considering using one of the properties, the former site of Manset Marine, to open a $5.8 million solar panel manufacturing plant that would employ 39 people. The council recently backed owner Chris Straka's proposal to apply for a $100,000 Community Development Block Grant from the state. Two adjacent properties operated by Rockland Marine are also on the list for consideration. Rockland Marine is hoping to expand its business by 25% and add eight jobs. The former Maine Department of Transportation office building could also be added to the PTZ in an effort to attract potential tenants.
The local Pine Tree Zone Committee and the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development would have to approve the additions, according to the news website.
