Rockland’s City Council will mull over a possible zone change on Monday night that will allow a Main Street property owner to lease a three-story commercial building for use as a restaurant.
The Bangor Daily News reports that the owners of 218 Main St., Polly Saltonstall and her husband, John Hanson Jr., brought the zoning proposal to Rockland city officials.
As it stands now, restrictions do allow a market to have up to 10 seats to serve food, but it must be a secondary use for the market. This puts 218 Main St. in a bind, as its location is far away enough from downtown that it doesn’t attract tourist foot traffic visiting the Knox County city — a must for a retail business, according to the BDN.
Saltonstall told the BDN that Melissa Kelly, owner of the popular Italian restaurant Primo, has expressed interest in the building to open an Italian market and eatery.
