Rockland restaurateur sues bookkeeper

A Rockland restaurant owner has filed a lawsuit against her former bookkeeper, alleging that the former employee embezzled nearly $80,000.

The Bangor Daily News reported Lynn Archer, owner of the Rockland restaurants Brass Compass Cafe and Archer’s on the Pier, filed the lawsuit earlier this week against Melanie Allen of Union. Allen, 39, was arrested in October by Rockland police on criminal theft and forgery charges.

The lawsuit claims Allen was hired as an independent contractor and alleges from January 2013 to October that Allen forged checks to take cash from the accounts of both restaurants, operated by Archer’s LLC. In addition to taking around $80,000, the lawsuit alleges Allen failed to pay state taxes for the restaurants, resulting in penalties.
