Safe Handling to be acquired

A Salt Lake City company is acquiring Auburn's Safe Handling Inc., with the deal expected to close at the end of the month.

Savage Services Corp. of Utah has entered into an agreement to acquire the assets, terminals and services business of Safe Handling, a bulk product transportation, warehousing and toll processing company, according to a release from Savage. The acquisition includes Safe Handling's locations in Auburn and New Stanton, Pa. The company will be rebranded as Savage Safe Handling and will remain based in Auburn. Savage Vice President Bradley Crist has been named general manager, and will relocate to Auburn. The transaction is expected to close Nov. 30.

Savage Services provides transportation and materials handling for the oil, coal, electric and railroad industries, and has over 140 operations in 35 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces, according to the release. The acquisition marks the company's first move into Maine, and will strengthen its presence in the Northeast, Savage CEO Allen Alexander said in the release.

Ford Reiche, president of Safe Handling and the Mainebiz 2008 Small Business Leader of the Year, told Mainebiz he plans to stay on with Safe Handling as a consultant and will be working on other projects related to his real estate holdings at rail facilities in Auburn.

As of 2008, Safe Handling employed 100 full-time workers and had annual revenue of $18 million.
