Saint Joseph’s College unveiled its $4.7 million athletics complex with a ceremonial turf-setting event on Thursday.
The college, on 474 acres on Sebago Lake in Standish, says the facility is step up for the college but will also serve as a venue for community programs. The complex will include an artificial turf-surfaced field, eight-lane track and on-site parking. The field’s lights have already been installed.
On Thursday, members of the board of trustees, President James Dlugos, coaches, athletes and donors gathered on the field to ceremonially roll out turf onto the field surface and mark this historic occasion for the college.
In addition to serving as the home venue for the college’s NCAA Division III Monks teams — soccer, soccer, field hockey and lacrosse programs, in particular — the site will significantly bolster the area’s available athletics facilities, becoming the first lighted turf/track college venue in southern Maine, the college said.
“We are proud that this facility will serve not only our student-athletes, but also the College recreation programs that engage the Lakes Region community and other outside groups from all over New England,” Dlugos said.
The board of trustees voted to provide seed money for the project and donors included Dead River Co., Cross Insurance, Prime Time Sports, Norway Savings Bank, the Dick Bailey family and Putnam family.
The facility will host its first event on Sept. 1, a men’s soccer game versus Husson University.
Saint Joseph’s, founded in 1912, has 1,000 on-campus students.
