The former Hostess bakery in Biddeford has gone up for sale, dashing any hopes that the property’s new owner would rehire any of the approximately 370 workers laid off in 2012.
The Portland Press Herald reported that Georgia-based Flower Foods listed the former industrial bakery for sale for $8.45 million because it didn’t align with its “strategic growth plan.” The company — which acquired several brands, bakeries and facilities from Hostess Brands last year — said it already has sufficient production capacity in the area.
Tony McDonald, a listing broker at The Boulos Co., told the newspaper that Flower Foods is planning to sell or move the bakery’s equipment. He said a few parties have already expressed interest in buying the properties, but there are no deals yet.
Some of the workers who were laid off when Hostess shut down the Biddeford bakery closed in November 2012 said they were hoping it would reopen. “I guess this just says it’s definitely over,” Sue Tapley, a former Hostess worker, told the Press Herald.
Hostess, which closed after several financial difficulties and a union strike, laid off about 500 people total in Maine. The company’s closure put 18,000 out of work nationwide.
