The company plans to hire 100 people for its Portland location.

San Francisco-based Grove Collaborative, an e-commerce company that sells natural home, beauty and personal care products directly to consumers, will open its first East Coast office in Portland in November.

The company plans to hire up to 100 full-time employees at its 9,000-square-foot site at 123 Middle St. in Portland.

Founded in 2016, it has more than 300 employees between its headquarters in San Francisco and warehouses in Missouri, Pennsylvania and Nevada. Grove Collaborative has raised more than $100 million in venture capital funding to date.

“We are excited to have Grove Collaborative select Maine as its flagship East Coast location,” said Peter DelGreco, president and CEO of Maine & Co., which helped attract the company to Portland. “The company’s success in attracting multiple rounds of venture capital speaks to its strong brand and management team. We look forward to Grove growing in Portland and providing important technology-based jobs to our region.”

CEO Stuart Landesberg characterizes Portland as the perfect site of Grove Collaborative's East Coast expansion.

Grove Collaborative is the third company based in the San Francisco area to choose Maine for establishing its East Coast operations in the past two years.

In June 2017, Cirrus LED Systems, a worldwide leader in LED technology and a member of the Inc. Magazine list of fastest-growing private companies in the nation, relocated its headquarters and manufacturing operations from San Francisco to Saco. Prior to that move, the company https://cirrusled.com/ had maintained a small East Coast sales office on Middle Street in downtown Portland. It continues to maintain a West Coast presence with its office in Petaluma, Calif.

Two months earlier, in April 2017, Grand Rounds, a San Francisco-based health-care technology company that matches patients with high-quality health-care providers, opened its first East Coast operations within Lewiston's historic Bates Mill Complex. The company told Mainebiz this past spring it “was actively hiring” to add to its 80-employee workforce in Lewiston, out of 400 total in three offices. It also noted it keeps outgrowing its space at the Bates Mill — going from 10,000 to 24,000 square feet, with plans to add more space soon.

In a news release announcing the opening of its East Coast location, Grove Collaborative’s co-founder and CEO Stuart Landesberg characterized Portland as the perfect location of its new expansion.

“Portland and its wonderful community align well with our values and our mission,” he said. “We believe in great employees, and that those employees create the best experience for our customers. Portland will be the perfect fit for Grove.”

Matthew Bray will lead the Portland operations for the company.
