Sanford businessmen launch theme park idea

A group led by businesman H. Allen Mapes is exploring the idea of opening a theme park in Sanford and will host a group of consultants for the project in late July.

The Journal Tribune reported that Bill Underwood and Mapes are leading the effort to bring two California-based theme park consultants to Sanford, where they say access to I-95 and Routes 16 and 202 could provide easy access to tourist traffic.

The paper reported the city has contributed $5,000 to bring in the consultants for brainstorming meetings. Mapes and others plan to contribute around $30,000 to pay for the consulting costs and initial study of the idea, the paper reported.
