Maine's unemployment rate continued its drop below 7%, a benchmark hit in April for the first time since 2008.
The unemployment rate for May came in at 6.8%, a drop from the 7.3% unemployment rate one year prior, according to estimates released by the Maine Department of Labor.
The rate is the lowest since November 2008.
While the unemployment rate has fallen, the DOL reported national unemployment continues to fall faster than in Maine, but national unemployment still remains higher. The U.S. unemployment rate stood at 7.6% for May, down from 8.2% one year prior.
Maine has also moved below the regional average unemployment, which stood at 6.9% across New England in May.
New Hampshire (5.3%), Vermont (4.1%) and Massachusetts (6.6%) had lower unemployment rates. Rhode Island (8.9%) and Connecticut (8.0%) saw higher unemployment rates in May.
