Waban, a Sanford-based provider of services for people with disabilities, has named a new executive director to replace Neal Meltzer when he retires in early 2021.
Jennifer Putnam, who has served as executive director of the Progress Center in Norway, will begin working with Meltzer in February to begin the transition, according to a news release Monday.
At the Progress Center, Putnam expanded programming for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and tripled the center’s operating budget. She currently serves on the boards of the Maine Association for Community Services Providers, the Maine Developmental Services Oversight and Advisory Board, and Community Housing of Maine.
Putnam holds an MBA from St. Joseph’s College in Standish and a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Maine. She also earned a certificate in leadership studies from the University of Southern Maine.
Meltzer will retire after leading Waban for 15 years. The nonprofit was founded in 1966 and today serves over 4,000 children and adults annually.
On Friday, Mainebiz reported that two other providers of services for people with disabilities, the Morrison Center in Scarborough and Bangor-based UCP of Maine, have agreed to merge. The transition will probably be complete in the first quarter of 2020.
