Sanford medical supply maker wins grant

Maine Manufacturing, a maker of diagnostic and laboratory supplies for the medical industry in Sanford, has won a national grant to research technology for diagnosing a wide range of illnesses.

The company learned yesterday of its selection for the $150,000 National Science Foundation grant, which it will use to explore new applications for its membrane technology and microscope slides, according to a press release. The company's membranes make microscope slides clearer and easier to read, aiding scientists researching heart disease and other clinical disorders.

Maine Manufacturing took over the 90,000-square-foot Whatman plant in Sanford one year ago, after its parent company, GE Healthcare Life Sciences, announced in 2008 that it would shutter the plant. Maine Manufacturing now employs 100 workers.
