The equipment and other assets of the former Moosehead Furniture plant in Monson will be auctioned off next week.
According to the website of Associated Auction & Liquidation Co., which specializes in sawmill, forestry and industrial auctions, a complete liquidation of the defunct furniture maker is scheduled for Dec. 18. A photo gallery of equipment to be auctioned includes tractor-trailer trucks, conveyor belts and other construction equipment. News of the auction comes after Louise Jonaitis, who bid $1.05 million at a bankruptcy auction to buy the former plant, said environmental issues with the property prevented her from completing the sale. Instead, she said she negotiated with mortgage holder Machias Savings Bank to buy just the equipment.
At the time, she told the Bangor Daily News she still hoped to restart the plant by leasing the building. County and town officials have begun working on an environmental assessment of the property and plan to seek federal and state cleanup funds. It is unclear how the auction will affect Jonaitis' plans or the future of the furniture plant.
