Scallop season halved

The scallop fishing season has been dramatically reduced to help the fishery recover.

The Dept. of Marine Resource Advisory Council yesterday voted to cut the number of days at sea for scallop fisherman by almost half next year, according to the television station WCSH 6. The divers are now allowed to go out from Dec. 1 through Jan. 4, and again from Feb. 25 through March 31. This year's season stretched straight from Dec. 1 through April 15.

The new rules also reduce the daily catch to 200 pounds and increase the size of the drag ring. While fishermen maintain they need more days at sea, they were able to convince the DMR not to close six areas of the Maine coast to fishing next year, the station reported.
