Scarborough Downs still pursuing a racino

The issue of a racino at Scarborough Downs is on the table once again, as officials at the horse racing track launch another resident poll.

Scarborough Downs has hired Pan Atlantic Strategic Marketing Services of Portland to conduct a phone survey of voters to determine the community's interest in a racino, according to The Forecaster. Pan Atlantic conducted similar surveys in both 2005 and 2007, but the racino proposal was ultimately defeated last year by only 225 votes. Political action committee Scarborough Village Partnership, led by Scarborough Downs, campaigned for slot machines at the race track, arguing it would bring millions in new revenue to the town. But voters rejected that idea last November, and the state Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices last winer fined the PAC for late filing.

That PAC is now defunct, and so far a new PAC for the racino has not been registered with the town, according to the paper. Neither Scarborough Down's attorney nor owner could be reached by the paper for comment.
