Feds grant nearly $2M to Maine business parks

The federal government is providing nearly $2 million to expand and develop three Maine business parks in Portland, Westbrook and Pittsfield.

Portland and Westbrook will receive a grant of $885,000 from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration to further develop the Five Star Industrial Park in Westbrook and the Rand Road Industrial Park in Portland to support the region's biotechnology cluster, according to a press release from Rep. Chellie Pingree's office. The grant will be matched by the two cities. "The timing of this is perfect in terms of positioning the Greater Portland area as a center for new high tech and biotech businesses," said Greg Mitchell, economic development director for Portland. "Our goal is to have the park open for business a year from now and be ready to go when the economy improves."

Pittsfield will receive $880,000 to construct and expand the Pittsfield Industrial Park, according to Rep. Mike Michaud's office. "This funding comes at an important time and will help Pittsfield attract new businesses and create local job opportunities," Michaud said. "Although the region has been hit hard during the past few years, it has great potential with its close proximity to the interstate, diversified workforce, and location in the heart of central Maine."
