Scarborough slots backers prompt vote recount

Scarborough election officials will spend the next few days reviewing ballots thanks to a recount request by supporters of a proposal to allow slot machines at Scarborough Downs.

Scarborough officials on Friday validated a recount petition signed by 100 Scarborough voters seeking a recount, according to the Portland Press Herald. The referendum on Nov. 4 to allow slot machines at the Scarborough Downs racetrack lost 5,804 to 5,565, or 51% to 49%, according to the official count. The racetrack's owner, Sharon Terry, threatened to move the operation out of Scarborough after voters rejected the referendum.

A ballot inspection earlier this week yielded no changes to the tally. The tight vote and machine glitches that led town officials to recount thousands of absentee ballots justifies the need for a recount, said Edward MacColl, a lawyer for the racetrack.

The recount should be completed by Dec. 1 or 2, the paper said.
