Maine home sales fall 14%

The national economy is being blamed for a 14% drop in Maine home sales in October, according to the Maine Association of Realtors.

In October, there were 897 single-family homes sold in Maine, compared to 1,041 homes sold in October 2007, a press release said. In the same month, the statewide median sales price dipped 9.28% to $171,000. "A portion of our market is the sale of second homes. With the latest hit to the stock market, many of our potential buyers have pulled back and are taking a ‘wait and see' attitude before considering a purchase," Bruce Tindal of Tindal & Callahan Real Estate in Boothbay Harbor said in the release.

In the Northeast, home sales dipped 9.8% last month and the regional median sales price also decreased 9.8% to $241,700, the press release said. Nationwide, sales of single-family homes remained unchanged from one year ago while the national median sales price dropped 11.2% in October to $181,800.
