Sea Bags, a Portland-based designer and manufacturer of handmade bags made from recycled sails, has opened two retail stores along the coast of Massachusetts.

The company announced Tuesday that its new stores in Rockport and Chatham opened this past weekend, adding to its existing stores in Portland, Freeport and Cape May, N.J. Founded in 1999, Sea Bags makes a range of tote bags, duffel bags, messenger bags and and the like, fashioned from old sails. Beth Shissler, the company's co-owner, was named a Mainebiz Woman to Watch in 2011.

“We have a lot of customers from Massachusetts who order online, with some even visiting us here in our Portland or Freeport stores,” Don Oakes, CEO of Sea Bags, said in a prepared statement. “It just makes sense to bring our products closer to them and these locations, with their beautiful coastal settings, feel like a natural fit for our products.”

Oakes said the company has already received a “warm reception” at both stores and that a future expansion in Massachusetts could be on the horizon.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the warm reception we have received from the local merchants, as well as from existing customers who are happy that they can now shop our stores closer to home,” he said. “We look forward to building on the lessons learned from opening these stores as we contemplate future stores in Massachusetts.”
