Sea Dog Brewing Co. said Wednesday it plans to close one of its two South Portland locations.
The Maine-based restaurant chain said it will close the site at 725 Broadway in South Portland. (The SoPo location at 125 Western Ave. is not affected.)
Fred Forsley, co-founder and partner of Shipyard Brewing Co., told Mainebiz, “It was a very difficult decision. The increased costs in the restaurant business made it hard for us to make money. We appreciate the support from other businesses and the community.”
Challenges included supply chain disruptions, maintaining staff and other issues, he said.
Forsley said employees have been offered jobs at other Sea Dog locations and the company is committed to finding places for all staff that would like to continue working for the outfit.
In Maine, Sea Dog Brewing has other locations at 125 Western Ave. in South Portland; 3 Cabela Blvd. in Scarborough; 1 Main St. in Camden; 26 Front St. in Bangor; and 1 Bowdoin Mill Island in Topsham.
It also has two locations in North Conway (Exeter and North Conway) in New Hampshire, and one in Florida (Treasure Island).
Sea Dog Brewing was founded in Camden by Pete Camplin Sr. in 1993. The Camplin family joined forces with Forsley in 2000.
For customers, Forsley said memberships, gift cards and loyalty points will continue to be honored at Sea Dog Brewing locations throughout Maine and New Hampshire.
For the Broadway space, Forsley said the company is considering other uses. Forsley said he's already spoken to some interested parties about the space and its potential.
