Southern Maine's magnetism for home buyers across the country appears to be strong, even since the end of the pandemic and the migration it spurred.
Greater Portland ranks No. 6 among the most popular real estate markets in recent searches of Realtor.com, the listings website of the National Association of Realtors.
The ranking, published last week, is based on the site's traffic volume, counts of pageviews-per-property and an index measuring searchers' geographical diversity. Data came from residential for-sale listings in the U.S. between July 2023 and June 2024. The top 300 urban areas were compared, and the top 10 ranked.
The Portland-South Portland area ranks just below Pittsburgh, at No. 5, and above the Tampa, Fla., metro, at No 7. Columbus, Ohio, topped the list.
Besides Portland, only one other New England market made the top 10 — Hartford, Conn., which is No. 9.
In a news release, Realtor.com described the Portland and Hartford markets: "Their smaller size offers a more manageable lifestyle with a strong sense of community and cultural identity, making them popular alternatives to larger cities in the Northeast."
The average number of views for a Portland-area property was 3.2 times the national average, the second-highest ratio among the top 10 markets.
According to Realtor.com, 80% of searches for homes in the Portland market originated in the Northeast, while 12.2% came from searchers in the South. The Midwest and the West accounted for 3.4% and 4.4% of the search traffic, respectively.

Realtor.com is one of the country's most visited sites for real estate searches, with over 100 million monthly active users.
