Sears Island lawsuits to be heard separately

A judge has said the three civil lawsuits filed against the Maine Department of Transportation concerning the Sears Island joint use plan will be heard separately, according to VillageSoup.

Justice Jeffrey Hjelm said the three lawsuits, which were filed in February, will be sent to a single Superior Court justice in Waldo County, but would remain separate actions. The suits claim an easement on about 600 acres of Sears Island between the MaineDOT and the Maine Coast Heritage Trust violates state law as well as Maine's Sensible Transportation Planning Act, VillageSoup reported.

MaineDOT requested the cases be dismissed in March.
