Sears nears return to L-A in smaller package

Following the closure of Sears department store in the Lewiston Mall, two Turner residents plan to open a smaller version of the national retailer in Auburn.

The Sun Journal reported that Jeromy and Jennifer Hood plan to open a 5,000-square-foot Sears Hometown Store in the town's Shaw's Plaza.

Those smaller versions of the national retail chain sell tools, lawn and garden equipment and other home goods, and offer access to larger items through Sears holdings by individual store orders or directly to customers.

Hood told the paper that he has offered jobs to four former employees of Sears' former Lewiston location, which closed in October 2012.

The stores operate on a consignment model where local operators take on local costs and take a portion of the sales revenue from the Sears inventory sold, according to the company's website.
