9 intervenors enter Casella's Juniper Ridge case

Nine parties have been granted intervenor status in hearings to determine whether Casella Waste Systems can expand its Juniper Ridge landfill in Old Town.

The Sun Journal reported that Auburn-based Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp., which runs an incinerator there, is the latest to join the group that will participate in Department of Environmental Protection hearings about Casella's expansion plan.

That plan comes after the closure of Casella's Biddeford incinerator, operated by the subsidiary Maine Energy Recover Co., at the end of 2012.

Casella's plan would send household garbage previously destined for Biddeford to its landfill in Old Town, bypassing three other incinerator facilities, including the MMWAC incinerator in Auburn.

The paper reported that Casella and Bureau of General Services lawyers submitted briefs earlier this month asking to block MMWAC and Portland-based ecomaine from receiving intervenor status in a pre-hearing conference Jan. 30 and hearings scheduled for April 9 and 10.

The other intervenors include the cities of Biddeford, Saco and Old Town; ecomaine, the Penobscot Energy Recovery Co., Old Town Fuel and Fiber; and residents in Stillwater, Alton and Old Town.
