Semester-at-sea program relocates to Maine

The Ocean Classroom Foundation is relocating its administrative offices from Rhode Island to Boothbay Harbor, making room for an expansion to its semester-at-sea programs.

The organization, which also had operated an office in Rockland, announced the relocation plans at a ceremony Sunday when it brought its three marine-research schooners into Boothbay Harbor, J.B. Smith, a captain and marine supervisor at the Rockland office, told Mainebiz this morning. The organization currently employs roughly 40, but expects to hire five administrative personnel in Boothbay Harbor to replace those who are not relocating from the Watch Hill, R.I., office.

The schooners play host to thousands of high school and college students every year, Smith said, and the relocation will allow the organization to serve more students.
