U.S. Sen. Susan Collins announced yesterday that an initial 2011 Senate appropriations bill has earmarked $1 million for Bangor's effort to build a new arena.
The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development approved the Fiscal Year 2011 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Senate Appropriations bill yesterday, which includes the funding. Collins is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. The bill now must be approved by the full Senate Appropriations Committee and then the full Senate.
The city is exploring building a $50 million, 7,400-seat arena to replace the aging Bangor Auditorium and has hired a Colorado-based architectural firm as well as Cianbro Corp. in Pittsfield to develop a preliminary design. The city plans to decide whether to move ahead with construction in mid-October, after it has firm cost estimates, according to the Bangor Daily News. A related plan to rehabilitate the civic center would add $12 million-$15 million to the project.
