Senate subcommittee supports $1B for third destroyer
The Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee approved on Tuesday the FY 2013 defense funding bill, which includes an additional $1 billion for a third DDG-51 destroyer that could be built by Bath Iron Works if its bid is accepted by the U.S. Navy over the competing Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss.
Sen. Susan Collins, a member of both the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in a release that the bill also includes $150 million to help pay for the repairs of the USS Miami, which was severely damaged by arson in May while dry-docked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery.
In September 2011, BIW won a $680 million contract to build a DDG 51 ship, and in February won a $663 million contract to build another. Collins said the inclusion of funding for the additional DDG-51 destroyer has bipartisan support in the Senate. The full Appropriations Committee will consider the bill on Thursday.
