The Maine Technology Institute approved seven grants totaling $95,213 to entrepreneurs from across Maine to support innovative technology projects in four sectors and four counties.
The awards advance new product and process development in biotechnology, precision manufacturing, environmental technology and information technology and leveraged $1.57 million of matching contributions from the award recipients.
“These small yet consequential investments will have a meaningful impact on the ability of these companies to protect their intellectual property, enhance the development and competitiveness of their products and attract much-needed federal R&D funding to Maine,” MTI President Brian Whitney said in a statement.
Three companies received MTI Tech Start grants totaling $10,670:
Warmsoft LLC, a Portland company, has created technology to substantially increase the insulation value of windows while shading or filtering light and enhancing aesthetics. The $5,000 award will be matched by $5,500 and will help fund the filing of an international patent for this technology that in turn will foster further commercial development.
Security Solutions of Maine LLC, a Bangor company that is utilizing its $670 in Tech Start funds to complete business planning and market analysis to support the commercialization of its product, “Immediate Danger Signal” system. The award will be matched by $800.
Boreal Games LLC, a Farmingdale company, plans to do market research to guide the development of its innovative digital, tactical collectible card game called “Crystal Companies.” Its $5,000 award will be matched by $9,500.
Two companies received MTI Business Accelerator grants totaling $74,543:
NBT Solutions LLC, a Portland company, will use its $24,565 grant for sales and marketing activities for its network infrastructure mapping solution for small- to mid-sized internet service providers building and operating fiber optic networks. The award will be matched with $58,435.
RockStep Solutions Inc., a Portland company, has developed a next-generation information management system to accelerate biomedical research. The company is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health through an SBIR Phase II award. The $49,978 grant will be matched by $1.49 million and will be used to build the company’s sales and marketing infrastructure to meet its near-term product sales goals.
Business Accelerator grants are available to start-up and early stage companies that have been awarded MTI Development Loans and to companies that have recently been chosen for a federal Small Business Innovation Research /Small Business Technology Transfer Phase I or Phase II grant and/or a Broad Agency Announcement award.
The next application deadline for MTI’s TechStart and Business Accelerator grant program is Feb. 7.
Two companies received MTI Phase O grants totaling $10,000:
bluShift Aerospace Inc., a Brunswick company, is using its $5,000 award to complete its application for a $125,000 SBIR grant from NASA to accelerate its development and commercialization of a biofuel-derived rocket. The grant will be matched by $5,040.
Eldertide LLC, a Dresden company, recently developed a proprietary technology to produce microbiologically stable liquid concentrates. The $5,000 grant will be matched by $5,000. Phase 0 grants are offered to individuals or companies seeking to submit SBIR/STTR Phase I Proposals to one of the 11 federal agencies participating in the program. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and at least 30 days in advance of the solicitation due date.
