A proposed casino in York County, which would be the third in Maine, has enough signatures to move forward.
The casino has its supporters and detractors. In December, Mainebiz reported that a group called Horseracing Jobs Fairness submitted 19,000 petitions containing more than 65,000 signatures to the Maine Secretary of State's Office seeking a statewide referendum vote in November 2017. The group had earlier in the year failed to get the number of signatures needed to place it on the 2016 ballot.
But Gov. Paul LePage has declared his opposition to the project, saying it would hurt the state’s economy, The Journal Tribune reported.
Maine now has two casinos: Oxford Casino and the Hollywood Casino Hotel & Raceway Bangor.
In a written statement, Lisa Scott, a principal officer at Horseracing Job Fairness, said the proposal would preserve the tradition of horse racing in Maine, create good-paying jobs and protect tax revenue.
