Elias Thomas of Shapleigh, broker-owner of Exit Real Estate, has traveled to India each year since 2001 as part of a team of Rotarians completing construction projects and taking part in a polio eradication drive, the Journal Tribune reported.
Another Shapleigh businessman, Bruce Lamb, owner of Springvale Hardware, has also been helping the effort by donating painters’ gloves.
“These painters’ gloves have become highly prized by the locals in India,” Elias told the paper.
Elias has also led an effort to raise awareness about homelessness throughout Rotary's District 7780, comprised of clubs in southwestern Maine, southeastern New Hampshire and one club in Newburyport, Mass., and helped raise tens of thousands of dollars to support the homeless, the poor and the hungry.
According to its website, since forming in 1905, Rotary International has helped a wide range of service organizations, with clubs focusing service efforts on promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, supporting education, and growing local economies.
