EY, a multinational professional services firm based in the United Kingdom, presented its Entrepreneur of the Year 2017 Award for New England to Benjamin Shaw, founder and CEO of Portland-based Vets First Choice.
Shaw, a 2015 Mainebiz Next Award recipient, is one of 17 New England entrepreneurs announced at a special gala event on June 27 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place.
As a regional award winner, he is eligible for consideration for the Entrepreneur of the Year National program. Winners will be announced at the Entrepreneur of the Year National Awards gala in Palm Springs, Calif., on Nov. 18, , which recognize business leaders in more than 145 cities and more than 60 countries.
Shaw founded Vets First Choice in May 2010 to help veterinarians identify, manage and close gaps in patient care, resulting in better health outcomes and improve practice profitability. In just five years he had built it into a $45 million company with more than 200 employees.
While the notions of a central-fill pharmacy or technology-enabled prescriptions are not new, he told Mainebiz Senior Writer Lori Valigra it took the application of technology to make it work online in the veterinary world, helping small practice owners grow revenue, reduce costs, improve client engagement and drive better health outcomes.
Formerly known as Ernst & Young, EY through its awards program recognizes entrepreneurs who demonstrate excellence and extraordinary success in such areas as innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to their businesses and communities. Shaw was selected by a panel of independent judges, EY stated in its news release.
“I am really proud of the Vets First Choice team and the amazing impact we’re having on veterinary practices,” Shaw said in a statement. “We have fantastic practice partners that are driving better health and financial outcomes thanks to our platform’s ability to provide insights into gaps in care and engage clients. These are the early days at Vets First Choice, and I’ve never been more excited for future prospects for our business.”
