“Shellfish Harvesters, Scientists Wrestle With 'Unprecedented' Closures Amid Toxic Algae Bloom”

A worrying prevalence of potentially deadly toxic algae blooms, possibly driven by climate change, is forcing shellfish harvesting closures. For Maine Public, Fred Bever reported the blooms are establishing themselves more firmly than ever. In 2016, toxin-bearing pseudo-nitszchia bloomed off Downeast Maine in areas that previously never saw an algae bloom. In 2017, pseudo-nitzschia appeared in Casco Bay for the first time. “If we were shut down now it would be a double whammy for a really tough year,” said Bangs Island Mussels co-owner Matt Moretti.
